no-cost opportunity to sail on Shrewsbury River & Bay (Long Branch)

  • 24 Jun 2026
  • 20 Sep 2026
  • through Sept 20, Wed evenings and other times, Marina Bay Drive, Long Branch NJ

Come sail away on the scenic Shrewsbury River & Bay, departing from the marina at Marina Bay Drive off Patten Avenue in Long Branch on Wednesday evenings or other arranged time from June 24 through September 20.

You're invited to join fellow NJAAPT members Martin Dempsey mdempsey99@hotmail.com and Phil Falcone pffalcone@gmail.com for a two to three hour sailing excursion on an 18-foot American, Harpoon or Precision. You'll experience firsthand, and we'll talk about, the classical physics involved in sailing as we traverse the inland tidal waters of the diverse, picturesque and expansive Shrewsbury River & Bay. Please email us for more information, to schedule a sail, and for directions.

We're suggesting to sail on Wednesday evenings from about 5 pm to sunset June 24 through September 20, but we likely can accommodate other times during the week. Bring a guest if you'd like.

We have adult size PFDs (life vests) to loan out to be worn onboard, but a hat, closed-toe footwear, and sunscreen are also advised. Each of the 18-foot sailboats can accommodate five passengers. These boats are among seven vessels owned by the local chapter of SEAS (Society for the Education of American Sailors) https://sailseas.com/Monmouth/ where Martin and Phil are members and skippers.

SEAS members volunteer many hours for annual boat maintenance, and to teach five sessions of Basic Sailing classes through Brookdale Community College in May, June, July, August and September. See https://www.brookdalecc.edu/lifelong-learning/recreation-hobbies/ (choose Learn to Sail) or see https://sailseas.com/Monmouth/basicsailing.htm for an overview.

Besides being NJ-certified physics teachers, Martin and Phil are trained sailing instructors, assisting in the Basic Sailing classes and facilitating on-water practice sessions for students and also novice SEAS members. The SEAS organization is fully insured and requires only that participants sign a liability waiver.

Besides providing hands-on sailing experience, Martin and Phil look forward to a robust discussion with fellow teachers of sailing-related physics topics including buoyancy; center of mass; wind and water forces including Bernoulli effect on sails, hull, centerboard/keel and rudder; some fluid mechanics; tides; knot-tying, etc.
